While finishing my Ph.D. and working as an assistant to a CFP, I witnessed a widow. Overwhelmed after the death of her husband, realizing she was now faced with managing the finances on her own, her face was filled with fear and devastation. She didn’t know who to trust, and was worried she’d make the wrong decisions and lose everything they had worked hard to save. She was afraid the lifestyle she was accustomed to would change. Would she have to go back to work? Would she have to be conservative in her spending? She feared becoming a burden to her family and was unsure of how to proceed. She feared losing her independence, and control of her money and her life.
